How to Select Statement Lighting for your home
Selecting lighting is my absolute favorite part of the design process. Cool floors are great but nobody walks through their home looking at the floor. Wallpaper is wonderful, but I think we can do even better by layering your space with more creativity and interest. Check out my favorite statement lighting pieces below for each room in your home and consider adding one of these jewels to your space! Your living room is a place to welcome friends and family and provide a big statement like this chandelier designed by Kelly Wearstler for Visual Comfort. The scale is grand to fit the lofted roofline and the metal diffusers form a connection with the wrought iron doors to the screen porch. Most importantly, it’s large and bold enough to stand out against the natural stone wall as a backdrop. The directional lighting facing upwards creates an overall brightness to the ceiling that acts as a skylight with soft, reflected light that softens the stone and metal surfaces. This piece says come hang out with use, we are over the top fabulous!
Another Kelly Wearstler original in the Dining Room balances the granduer of the custom designed table and adjacent console. This pendant light acts as task lighting placed directly above the table and directs the light straight to the glass table top. You will notice the subtle connection between the shape of the diffusers in the family room and the single arc of the Dining Room fixture.
Sometimes you need to know when NOT to place a light fixture. This Kitchen has beautiful wood beams that decorate the ceiling and does not require additional, decorative lighting. However, we did place a pendant above the breakfast table for additional task lighting at the table surface. The simple drum pendant in a brushed stainless finish connects with the stainless steel kitchen accents and the sold drum balances the repetition of the beams.
This Powder Room packs a punch with statement wallpaper on the walls and ceiling! The light fixtures needed to be equally elegant while not overwhelming this small and interesting space. The long cylinder fixtures partner well with the live bronze legs on the vanity style sink and have marbled glass diffusers to conceal the light bulbs. Uplighting is essential here as it avoids casting shadows on your guests faces. They will keep coming back because they look so fabulous in this lighting!
Wall lights added as a vertical element to bookcases and above artwork and act as a highlighting feature for special items like artwork, treasured books and family photos.
Mounting your sconces over the top of a mirror adds dramatic and interesting reflections of both the fixture’s shape and light pattern. Wall sconces are my favorite way to achieve this look, but you can also hang pendants close to the mirror’s surface for a similar affect.
Lamps are an essential task lighting source to have in your home. They can be a fun way to try out your design style and are easily replaced if that style changes. These gorgeous glass etched lamps were the home owners and we only needed to add new shades to fit them into the new decor. Whether you select timeless lamps like these, or something more trendy, you will appreciate the task lighting of lamps for reading your favorite book or magazine.
